Marshall Islands Climate Change Adaptation Outcomes
Target outcomes include 350 residents trained in climate-resilient agriculture, water catchment maintenance, and basic infrastructure assessment across the 29 atolls. The program will record reductions in imported food dependency measured at pilot sites and the number of atoll communities with updated evacuation and water security plans.
The Marshall Islands population of 42,000 is spread across low-lying atolls where the average elevation is two meters. Saltwater intrusion already affects 60 percent of taro pits on the outer islands, and the national government projects that 30 percent of arable land will be lost by 2040 under current sea-level rise rates. Outcomes therefore prioritize measurable increases in local food production capacity rather than general awareness.
Economic activity centers on compact agreement payments from the United States and limited fisheries revenue, leaving little domestic capital for adaptation capital projects. Training therefore emphasizes low-cost techniques such as raised-bed salinized soil management and rainwater system repairs that communities can implement without external contractors.
Implementation routes through the Marshall Islands government Office of the Chief Secretary, which assigns technical staff to outer-island visits on the government field trip vessels. International development partners supply curriculum on drought-resistant crops already tested on Kwajalein and Majuro.
Unlike Palau programs that focus on tourism infrastructure, Marshall Islands training must address atoll-specific constraints where freshwater lenses are the sole source of drinking water and any infrastructure work requires barge transport from Majuro.
