Climate Barriers in the Marshall Islands
Rising sea levels have already submerged portions of several atolls in the Marshall Islands, with NOAA tide gauge data showing a 7-10 mm annual increase at Kwajalein and Majuro stations since 1993. This physical loss directly restricts the land base available for field research stations and sample collection sites required for climate migration studies.
Outer island residents of Rongelap and Ailuk atolls face the most immediate relocation pressure, as saltwater intrusion has reduced arable land by an estimated 40% since 2000 according to USDA soil surveys adapted to Pacific conditions. These households, primarily subsistence fishers and copra producers, lack access to the inter-island transport network centered on Majuro that research teams would need for longitudinal data collection.
The Marshall Islands' Compact of Free Association with the United States creates migration pathways unavailable to residents of neighboring Kiribati or Nauru, requiring any funded project to distinguish between Compact-enabled movement to Hawaii and Arkansas versus purely environmental displacement. Research protocols must therefore incorporate separate tracking of Compact versus non-Compact cohorts.
Laboratory and data collection expenses under this grant can support temporary field camps on high-elevation islands such as Likiep, where elevation exceeds 3 meters, allowing measurement of differential migration rates. Model development funding can be used to integrate Republic of the Marshall Islands census block data with 2023 household surveys that record exact distances from current shorelines.
Populations Displaced in the Marshall Islands

This internal concentration strains existing research infrastructure, as the University of the South Pacific campus in Majuro has limited wet lab capacity for processing salinity and fisheries samples.
Households headed by women in the outer islands show higher rates of temporary migration to urban centers, creating gaps in traditional knowledge transmission about reef systems that climate resilience models must capture. Projects can allocate materials budgets to equip these households with GPS loggers and basic water quality test kits to generate primary datasets that meet grant scientific standards.
