These barriers fall most heavily on outer-island populations in places such as Rongelap and Utirik, where transport links to Majuro or Ebeye occur only by weekly supply vessels. College of the Marshall Islands faculty report that 68 percent of potential research participants lack consistent electricity for refrigeration of study medications or electronic data capture.
The research funding supports work between the College of the Marshall Islands and Pacific Islander health organizations precisely to quantify these exposure pathways. Investigators must demonstrate field protocols adapted to atoll hydrology and must budget for diesel generators and satellite uplinks rather than mainland grid connections.
Applications require documentation of at least one outer-atoll data-collection site and letters from the Ministry of Health confirming that proposed sample sizes align with the national population of approximately 42,000. Budgets must itemize freight costs for equipment shipped via Honolulu, which typically add 45 percent to standard laboratory supply prices.
